What an AI voice agent costs, and what drives it
An AI voice agent has three kinds of cost: per-minute usage, small fixed monthly fees and a one-time setup. Here is what each covers and what makes the bill go up or down.

How is an AI voice agent priced?
An AI voice agent has three kinds of cost: usage, which is charged per minute of conversation; fixed monthly fees, which are small; and a one-time setup. Usage is the largest part for any business with regular call volume.
Providers package these differently. Some bill per minute, others offer a flat monthly plan sized to expected call volume, which is easier to budget for. Either way the same underlying costs are being covered.
What makes up the per-minute cost?
The per-minute cost of an AI voice agent is the sum of the services that run during a call. Each one is billed only while a call is in progress:
- Speech-to-text, which transcribes the caller as they speak.
- The language model, which decides what to say.
- Text-to-speech, which produces the agent's voice.
- The orchestration platform that connects those three in real time.
- Telephony: the phone line minutes themselves.
What are the fixed monthly costs?
The fixed monthly costs of an AI voice agent are small compared with usage. They are typically a phone number and, depending on the tools used, a subscription tier for one or more of the underlying services. Most of the stack is pay-as-you-go, so a quiet month costs very little.
What makes the bill go up or down?
Five things move the cost of an AI voice agent more than anything else:
- Call volume and call length, since most of the cost is per minute.
- How much the agent talks: voice generation is billed on what the agent says, so a chatty agent costs more than one that mostly listens.
- How complex its instructions are: a simple FAQ agent is cheaper to run than one with a large knowledge base.
- Optional extras such as call recording and storage.
- Transfers to staff, because both legs of the call are live while a call is being handed over.
What does the setup fee cover?
The setup fee covers the work of making the agent fit one particular business: writing and testing its script and knowledge base, connecting it to calendars or booking systems, configuring when it hands over to staff, and tuning it against real calls in the first weeks.
How does it compare with hiring a receptionist?
An AI voice agent costs a fraction of a hired receptionist and covers every hour of the week, including nights and weekends. It does not replace a person for complex or sensitive calls, so the usual arrangement is for the agent to take routine calls and overflow, and pass everything else to staff.
For an exact figure, the inputs that matter are monthly call volume, average call length and which systems the agent needs to connect to.
