AI agent vs chatbot: what is the difference?

What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?
A chatbot answers messages. An AI agent is given a goal and takes actions to reach it. A chatbot tells a customer the opening hours; an agent checks the calendar, books the appointment, sends the confirmation and updates the customer record.
The difference is not how clever the language is. Both can be built on the same language model. The difference is whether the system can use tools and carry a task through several steps without a person driving each one.
What can an AI agent do that a chatbot cannot?
An AI agent can do four things a chatbot cannot:
- Use tools: read and write to a CRM, calendar, inbox, database or phone line.
- Work in steps: break a goal into tasks, do them in order and check the result of each.
- Decide what to do next: choose an action based on what it just found, rather than follow a fixed script.
- Hand over deliberately: recognise when a task is outside its limits and pass it to a person with the context attached.
When is a chatbot enough?
A chatbot is enough when the job is answering questions from a fixed body of information: opening hours, policies, product details, how-to guidance. If nothing needs to be looked up in a live system and nothing needs to change as a result of the conversation, a chatbot is simpler, cheaper and easier to control.
When do you need an AI agent?
You need an AI agent when the conversation has to end in something being done. Booking, qualifying a lead and logging it, chasing a missing document, updating an order, following up three days later: these all require access to systems and the ability to act, which is what makes it an agent.
A useful test is to ask what a new member of staff would have to do after the conversation ends. If the answer is nothing, a chatbot will do. If the answer is a list of tasks, that list is the agent's job.
Is an AI agent riskier than a chatbot?
Yes, because an agent can change things. A chatbot that gets something wrong gives a bad answer; an agent that gets something wrong can book the wrong slot or email the wrong person. That risk is managed by limiting what the agent is allowed to do, logging every action, testing it against real cases before launch, and requiring a person to approve anything that is costly or hard to undo.
